Sending money from Australia to New Zealand? Here's what to know
If you're moving money across the Tasman, the transfer may be tied to a relocation, property payment or a date when funds need to be available in New Zealand. For a larger AUD to NZD payment, it's worth deciding how much needs to arrive and when you want to convert the Australian dollars.
The exchange rate can move while you're planning the transfer, so the timing of the conversion can affect the NZD amount received. Currencyflow shows you the exchange rate available upfront, so you can see where you stand before you decide.

Sending Australian dollars to a New Zealand bank account
If your funds are held with an Australian bank such as Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, NAB or ANZ, you can fund your Currencyflow transfer using the account instructions supplied for your payment.
Once you’ve agreed your AUD to NZD exchange rate, you send the Australian dollars to Currencyflow. We convert them into New Zealand dollars at the agreed rate and send the NZD to the account you’ve provided. The recipient may bank with ANZ New Zealand, ASB, BNZ or Westpac New Zealand.
New Zealand does not use IBANs. Recipient accounts use a bank-branch-account-suffix format, and a SWIFT/BIC may also be required for an international payment. Check the full account details carefully before the payment is released, particularly for larger family, property or relocation transfers.
How long does a transfer from Australia to New Zealand take?
Most transfers arrive the same working day or the next.
- The small time difference. New Zealand runs two to three hours ahead of eastern Australia, so a transfer funded in your morning usually reaches the account the same day.
- When you fund the transfer. Sending your Australian dollars to us earlier in the day gives the payment the best chance of completing that working day.
- First-transfer verification. Your first payment can take a little longer while your account is verified, then later transfers are quicker.
- Compliance checks on larger amounts. A big relocation or property payment may need source-of-funds evidence, so having it ready avoids a pause.
- Weekends and public holidays. Bank processing pauses over weekends and public holidays in either country, which can add a day around those dates.
A bank on this route often takes two to three working days. With us, most AUD to NZD transfers land same or next working day, with a few factors affecting the exact timing.
What do you need to send money to New Zealand?
To send money to a New Zealand bank account, you'll need:
- Photo ID, either a passport or a driving licence.
- Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
- The recipient's full name as it appears on their New Zealand account.
- The recipient's New Zealand account number and the bank's SWIFT/BIC code.
- The purpose of the transfer, which we'll ask about for larger amounts.
- Source-of-funds evidence for a large transfer, for example a payslip, a property sale statement, or evidence of savings.
New Zealand identifies accounts by a bank-branch-account-suffix number rather than an IBAN, so make sure you have the full number and the bank's SWIFT/BIC code.
Legal and tax notes for Australia to New Zealand transfers
- On the Australian side, Australia has no gift tax and no general inheritance tax, so sending money to family or your own account isn't taxed as a gift at the Australian end. Providers report international transfers to AUSTRAC, but that's a compliance obligation on the business, not a cost or a tax to you.
- If you're on a means-tested Australian pension, note that Centrelink's gifting rules let you give away up to AUD 10,000 in a financial year, or AUD 30,000 over five financial years, before the excess is treated as a deprived asset in your pension test for five years. Worth checking before a large gift.
- On the New Zealand side, receiving money isn't taxed as a gift. New Zealand abolished gift duty in 2011 and has no inheritance or estate tax, and no general capital gains tax, so a personal transfer to family or your own account isn't taxed on arrival. Income the money later earns (interest, rent, dividends) is taxable in the normal way.
- One New Zealand exception is residential property. The bright-line test can tax the gain on residential property sold within two years of buying it (for property acquired on or after 1 July 2024), treating that gain as taxable income. That applies to a property sale, not to an ordinary cash transfer.
- If you're emigrating permanently, retirement savings can move between an Australian complying super fund (APRA-regulated) and a KiwiSaver scheme under the Trans-Tasman Retirement Savings Portability scheme, and those transfers are exempt from entry and exit taxes. It's a voluntary, fund-to-fund arrangement, separate from an everyday money transfer, so check that both your super fund and KiwiSaver provider take part.
- These notes are general information, not tax advice. For a large gift, an emigration move, or anything involving property or retirement savings across both countries, it's worth taking professional advice on your own situation.
