Sending pounds to a Spanish bank account
If you’re sending money from the UK to Spain, the recipient account may be held with a major Spanish bank such as Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank or Banco Sabadell.
After agreeing your GBP to EUR exchange rate, you send the pounds to Currencyflow using the funding details we give you. We convert the GBP into euros at the agreed rate and send the EUR to the Spanish bank account you’ve provided.
Spanish accounts use an IBAN, and euro payments can be made through SEPA, the European payment network used by banks across Spain and the wider SEPA area.
If you’re buying property in Spain, you may be paying a lawyer, notary, developer or seller rather than your own bank account, so make sure the beneficiary name, IBAN and any required payment reference match the instructions you’ve been given. This route is also commonly used for relocation, family support and moving savings between the UK and Spain.
How long does a transfer from UK to Spain take?
Most transfers from the UK to Spain are delivered either the same day or by the next working day. Here are some factors that affect speed:
- Time of day you fund the transfer
- Bank transfer daily limits
- Whether all recipient details are complete
- Any required compliance checks
- Spanish bank hours and holidays (e.g. Fiesta Nacional, San Isidro)
Banks typically take 2–5 working days, especially for larger transfers. Currencyflow is designed to move faster.
What information do you need to send money to Spain?
To send money to a Spanish bank account, you'll need:
- a valid form of ID (passport or driving licence)
- proof of address (e.g. a utility bill or bank statement)
- the recipient's full name
- the recipient's bank details including IBAN (International Bank Account Number)
- a brief purpose for the transfer
Note: Transfers over €10,000 into Spain may require the recipient to declare them for tax purposes under Spanish gift and inheritance laws (ISD), especially if not linked to a purchase or loan.
Legal and tax notes for UK to Spain transfers
- No UK tax applies for individuals sending personal funds abroad
- In Spain, incoming transfers over €10,000 may need to be reported, especially if considered a gift
- Gifts or non-commercial payments may be subject to ISD (Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones), depending on the recipient's residency and relationship to the sender
- Transfers linked to property purchases are generally exempt from gift classification but should be well documented
- Spain and the UK have a double taxation agreement in place so transfers of income, such as pensions, aren't taxed twice
- Always consult a Spanish tax advisor if you're sending or receiving large sums, especially for property or inheritance
