Sending AED from a UAE bank to Saudi Arabia
If your funds are held with a UAE bank such as Emirates NBD, First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB), Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) or Dubai Islamic Bank, you can send the dirhams to Currencyflow using the funding details provided for your transfer.
Once you’ve agreed your AED to SAR exchange rate, you send the AED to Currencyflow. We convert the dirhams into Saudi riyals at the agreed rate and send the SAR to the Saudi bank account you’ve provided.
Saudi recipients may hold accounts with major banks such as Al Rajhi Bank, Saudi National Bank (SNB), SAB or Riyad Bank. Saudi bank accounts use IBANs beginning SA, and domestic payments in the Kingdom are supported by the SARIE payment system.
Both UAE and Saudi Arabia use IBANs, so check the beneficiary name and IBAN carefully before a larger payment is made.
How long does a transfer from the UAE to Saudi Arabia take?
Most transfers arrive the same working day or the next.
- The different weekends. The UAE closes Saturday and Sunday and Saudi Arabia closes Friday and Saturday, so a transfer sent late in the week may only complete once both sides are open again.
- When you fund the transfer. Sending your dirhams to us earlier in the day gives the payment the best chance of completing that working day.
- First-transfer verification. Your first payment can take a little longer while your account is verified, then later transfers are quicker.
- Compliance checks on larger amounts. A big investment or business payment may need source-of-funds evidence, so having it ready avoids a pause.
- Receiving bank processing. Once we release the riyals, the Saudi bank's own processing usually completes same or next working day.
A bank on this route can take a few working days. With us, most AED to SAR transfers reach the Saudi account same or next working day, with the weekend mismatch the main thing to plan around.
What do you need to send money to Saudi Arabia?
To send money to a Saudi bank account, you'll need:
- Photo ID, either a passport or a national ID.
- Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
- The recipient's full name exactly as it appears on their Saudi account.
- The recipient's full Saudi IBAN.
- The purpose of the transfer, which we'll ask about for larger amounts.
- Source-of-funds evidence for a large transfer, such as a business invoice, an investment record, or a bank statement.
For a property or investment payment, the recipient may be a developer, a fund, or a lawyer's account, so confirm the IBAN and reference before you send.
Legal and tax notes for UAE to Saudi Arabia transfers
- On the UAE side, there's no personal income tax and no gift or inheritance tax on individuals, so sending money to family, a supplier, or your own account isn't taxed at the Emirati end. The UAE does levy a 9% corporate tax on business profits above AED 375,000, introduced in 2023, but that applies to businesses, not to personal transfers.
- On the Saudi side, the Kingdom imposes no personal income tax and no gift or inheritance tax on individuals, whatever their nationality, so money arriving for family or your own account isn't taxed as income.
- One Saudi exception is real estate. Transfers of Saudi property are generally subject to a 5% Real Estate Transaction Tax (RETT), though gifts of property between spouses and relatives up to the third degree of kinship can be exempt when properly documented. That applies to property changing hands, not to an ordinary cash transfer.
- Cash declarations are separate from electronic transfers. Travellers physically carrying cash or valuables must declare AED 60,000 or more leaving the UAE (declared online through the Afseh platform), and SAR 40,000 or more entering Saudi Arabia, to the respective customs authorities. These are customs rules for cash in person, not taxes, and neither applies to a bank transfer.
- These notes are general information, not tax advice. Business, investment, and property payments can carry their own tax treatment, so for anything beyond a straightforward personal transfer it's worth taking professional advice.
