Sending money from the US to Canada? Here's what to know

A US to Canada transfer may be linked to property, relocation or a business payment priced in Canadian dollars. If the recipient needs a set CAD amount, the USD to CAD exchange rate can change the dollar cost of the transfer while you're planning it.

Consider whether your priority is a fixed payment date, a fixed CAD amount or flexibility over timing. Currencyflow lets you see the exchange rate available upfront, so you can make that decision with a clear view of the numbers.

Why people send money from the USA to Canada

As each other's closest trading partners, the US and Canada see constant transfers for business, family, property, and relocation.

Briefcase icon

Business and supplier payments

US firms paying Canadian suppliers, contractors, or partners move money across the border regularly. On repeated payments, a steady rate and clear pricing keep the running cost predictable rather than eroded by a wide margin each time.
Family icon

Family support and study costs

With family and students spread across both countries, regular transfers for support, tuition, or living costs in Canada are routine. For payments that repeat, transparent pricing matters more than any single day's headline number.
House icon

Property and relocation

Buying property in Canada, or moving there for work, means shifting a larger sum where the rate on the amount decides the final cost in Canadian dollars. If you send the other way too, our Canada to US page covers that route.
Investment growth icon

Investment

Funding a Canadian investment or account means moving a larger sum, and on a transfer that size the rate does most of the work in deciding what lands. A tight, transparent rate makes a real difference.

Planning your USD to CAD transfer

Decide whether the amount or timing matters most

A US to Canada transfer may be linked to property, relocation or a business payment priced in Canadian dollars. The USD to CAD market rate can move while you're planning, so it helps to know whether your priority is a fixed Canadian-dollar amount or a fixed payment date.

Fix a rate for a future transfer

If you know you'll need to make the payment later, a forward contract can let you fix an available USD to CAD exchange rate in advance. That can give you more certainty over the amount of Canadian dollars you'll receive or the amount of US dollars you'll need to send.

Set a target rate if your timing is flexible

If you don't need to exchange straight away, a target rate order can wait for your chosen USD to CAD exchange rate and book automatically if that rate becomes available while the order is active. There's no guarantee the target rate will be reached.

Sending US dollars to a Canadian bank account

If your funds are held with a major US bank such as JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo or Citibank, you can fund your Currencyflow transfer using the account information supplied for your payment.

Once you’ve agreed your USD to CAD exchange rate, you send the US dollars to Currencyflow. We convert them into Canadian dollars at the agreed rate and send the CAD to the Canadian bank account you’ve provided.

The recipient may hold an account with a major Canadian bank such as RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO or CIBC. Canadian bank details typically include an institution number, transit number and account number, with a SWIFT/BIC used for some international payments.

This differs from the US routing-number format, so it’s worth checking each field carefully before the payment is made.

How long does a transfer from the USA to Canada take?

Most transfers arrive the same working day or the next.

  • Shared time zones. The US and Canada run on the same clock, so a transfer funded in your day generally reaches the account within Canadian banking hours the same day.
  • When you fund the transfer. Sending your US dollars to us earlier in the day gives the payment the best chance of completing that working day.
  • First-transfer verification. Your first payment can take a little longer while your account is verified, then later transfers are quicker.
  • Compliance checks on larger amounts. A big property or investment payment may need source-of-funds evidence, so having it ready avoids a pause.
  • Weekends and public holidays. Bank processing pauses over weekends and public holidays in either country, which can add a day around those dates.

A bank on this route typically takes two to four working days. With us, most USD to CAD transfers land same or next working day, helped by the shared time zones.

What do you need to send money to Canada?

To send money to a Canadian bank account, you'll need:

  • Photo ID, either a passport or a driver's license.
  • Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
  • The recipient's full name as it appears on their Canadian account.
  • The recipient's transit number, institution number, account number, and the bank's SWIFT/BIC code.
  • The purpose of the transfer, which we'll ask about for larger amounts.
  • Source-of-funds evidence for a large transfer, such as a pay stub, a sale statement, or evidence of savings.

Canadian banks receive international payments using a transit number, an institution number, an account number, and the bank's SWIFT/BIC code, so make sure your recipient gives you all of them.

Legal and tax notes for USA to Canada transfers

  • On the US side, US gift tax falls on the person giving, if they're a US citizen or resident. For 2026, a giver can give up to $19,000 per recipient in the year with no filing (or $38,000 for a married couple using gift-splitting). Above that, the excess draws on the lifetime gift and estate tax exemption, which is $15 million per person for 2026, and the giver files a gift-tax return (Form 709). No gift tax is actually due until that lifetime exemption is used up, but the return still has to be filed once a gift tops the annual exclusion.
  • This is a donor-side rule, separate from the Form 3520 rule that applies when a US person receives a gift from abroad. Since here the money is leaving the US for Canada, Form 3520 gift reporting doesn't come into it, the relevant US rule is the giver's annual exclusion and lifetime exemption above.
  • On the Canadian side, Canada has no gift tax and no inheritance or estate tax, so money arriving for family or your own account isn't taxed as a gift when it lands. Where Canadian tax can come up is on what the money later earns or on an asset's gain, not on receiving the transfer.
  • International electronic funds transfers of CAD 10,000 or more are reported to FINTRAC by the receiving Canadian institution as an anti-money-laundering measure, which is a compliance step, not a tax or a cost to you.
  • These notes are general information, not tax advice. A large gift from a US person, a relocation, or a property purchase in Canada are all situations where it's worth taking professional advice on both sides.
