Sending money from Portugal to the UK? Here's what to know

Portugal is a euro corridor on the SEPA network, so transfers are quick. Most EUR to GBP payments with us settle the same working day or the next once your euros clear, and the UK leg arrives over Faster Payments. As with any European route, the cost sits in the exchange rate, not a fixed fee.

A bank often shows little or no charge and then applies a wider margin on the rate, which mounts up on a property-sized amount. We charge no payment transfer fees, and our margin is fixed, transparent, and set by transfer size, so a large sale sum is priced more keenly than a small transfer. The live EUR to GBP page shows the market you're pricing against.

To open an account you'll need photo ID and proof of address. On a large transfer such as property proceeds, our compliance team asks for proof of source of funds, typically the sale deed (escritura) or a bank statement. There's no fixed cap on what you can send, though larger amounts go through extra verification. If you're moving the proceeds of a sale or a full savings balance, our guide to large transfers walks through it.

Why people send money from Portugal to the UK

This corridor is shaped by people bringing their money home, led by property and pension income.

Bringing home property sale proceeds

Britons who retired or spent years in Portugal are selling up, and the euros from a completed sale need to reach a UK account, often as one large transfer. On a sum that size, the rate on the day genuinely matters.

Returning to the UK for good

People winding down time abroad move their whole savings balance across. Getting a good rate on a lifetime's savings is where the value sits, so it's worth planning the timing rather than sending blind.

Portuguese pension and rental income

Those who kept a foot in Portugal receive euros from a let property or a local pension and convert them to sterling regularly. A consistent rate beats a fluctuating one for payments that repeat.

Family support across borders

Relatives split between Portugal and the UK send gifts or support in either direction. A gift routed from a Portuguese account can have a tax angle, which the legal notes below explain.

Understanding the EUR to GBP exchange rate

Why the rate matters on this corridor

Sale proceeds and repatriated savings are large, so the exchange rate, not any flat charge, is what really decides what lands in your UK account. On a sum that size, a small move in the rate outweighs any fee.

The mid-market rate and what you receive

The mid-market rate is the midpoint quoted between banks. We apply a small, transparent margin set by transfer size, with no payment transfer fees, and show you the exact EUR to GBP rate for your amount before you confirm.

How the EUR to GBP rate moves

Portugal is in the eurozone, so the rate tracks the euro against the pound. It's driven by European Central Bank and Bank of England policy and the relative strength of the two economies, so it's sterling against the euro that you're watching, not anything Portugal-specific.

Fixing a rate before a sale completes

Portuguese sales can take time, and the rate can move while you wait to complete. A forward contract lets you lock in an EUR to GBP rate now for a payment due later, so the pounds you're expecting don't shift with the market.

Sending euros from Portugal to a UK account

In Portugal, most everyday payments run through Multibanco, the country's near-universal network for cards, ATMs, and bill references, but that's a domestic system: to send money abroad it's your Portuguese IBAN that we use, not a Multibanco reference. Getting the details exactly right is what keeps a Portugal transfer clean: your Portuguese account pays out over SEPA using its IBAN, and the name on the payment should match the account to avoid a query at the receiving end.

In Britain the format flips, your recipient gives a sort code and account number rather than an IBAN, and the pounds arrive over Faster Payments within seconds of release. Portugal is in the eurozone, so the EUR to GBP rate tracks the euro against the pound, worth watching before a large sale transfer. If you also send from the UK, our UK to Portugal page covers that route, with more on our destinations hub.

How long does a transfer from Portugal to the UK take?

Most transfers arrive the same working day or the next.

  • When you fund the transfer. Sending your euros to us by SEPA early in the day gives the payment the best chance of completing the same working day.
  • SEPA and Faster Payments. The euro leg runs over SEPA and the UK leg over Faster Payments, both quick, so neither end is usually the delay.
  • First-transfer verification. Your first payment can take a little longer while your account is verified, then later transfers are faster.
  • Source-of-funds checks on a large sale. A big incoming amount may need the escritura or a statement, so having it ready avoids a hold.
  • Weekends and holidays. SEPA doesn't settle on weekends or Portuguese and UK bank holidays, which can add a day around those dates.

A bank on this route often takes two to four working days. With us, most EUR to GBP payments settle same or next working day, with a few factors affecting the exact timing.

What do you need to send money to the UK?

To send money to a UK bank account, you'll need:

  • Photo ID, either a passport or a driving licence.
  • Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
  • The recipient's full name as it appears on their UK account.
  • The recipient's UK sort code and account number.
  • The purpose of the transfer, which we'll ask about for larger amounts.
  • Source-of-funds evidence for a large transfer, typically the escritura for property proceeds or a bank statement for savings.

For the proceeds of a Portuguese property sale, the escritura (sale deed) is usually the source-of-funds document our compliance team will ask for.

Legal and tax notes for Portugal to UK transfers

  • On the UK side, receiving money from Portugal isn't taxed. The UK has no gift tax on the recipient, and moving your own savings or sale proceeds into a UK account isn't income. Where UK tax can arise is on what the money represents, such as a capital gain on a property, not on the transfer itself. If the person sending is UK-domiciled, a large lifetime gift can still fall under inheritance tax's seven-year rule, where amounts over the £3,000 annual exemption only fully leave the estate after seven years.
  • On the Portuguese side, gifts are subject to Stamp Duty (Imposto do Selo), but the scope is narrow. Imposto do Selo applies only to assets located in Portugal, and gifts to close family, a spouse or civil partner, children, grandchildren, parents, or grandparents, are exempt regardless of amount. Non-family recipients face a 10% rate, and since the 2024 State Budget reforms a gift to close family over €5,000 still requires a Modelo 1 declaration to the tax authority, which is administrative rather than a charge. A transfer of your own money from Portugal to a UK account isn't a gift, so it falls outside this entirely.
  • These notes are general information, not tax advice. If you're moving the proceeds of a sale, gifting a significant sum, or your affairs span both countries, it's worth taking professional advice on your own situation.
