Whether you're repatriating income, supporting family, or investing, sending money from Qatar to the UK should be straightforward, but traditional bank transfers often aren't.

At Currencyflow, we help you move money from Qatar to the UK quickly, securely, and without the usual friction. You'll get better QAR to GBP rates, no payment transfer fees, and personal support from start to finish, especially important for larger transfers.

Understanding the QAR to GBP Exchange Rate

Why the rate matters

Even a small shift in the QAR to GBP exchange rate can affect how many pounds arrive, especially for large transfers. Banks often apply margins of 3-5% without disclosing them clearly.

Real market rates, not inflated ones

We use live market data to give you a fair QAR to GBP rate, with a small transparent margin, meaning more pounds delivered, and no nasty surprises.

Currency links to the USD

The Qatari riyal is pegged to the US dollar. That means the QAR to GBP rate tends to move in line with changes in the USD to GBP exchange rate. UK interest rate decisions, economic updates, and political headlines can all impact the timing of your transfer.

Want to lock in a rate?

If you're planning a future transfer, such as a property completion or tuition invoice, we offer forward contracts. These let you lock in today's rate for peace of mind.

Sending Qatari riyals to a UK account

On the Qatar side, banks use IBANs (starting QA) and send internationally over SWIFT, so a transfer from your Qatari account carries the usual reference details. The riyal is held at a fixed peg to the US dollar, which the Qatar Central Bank has maintained for years, so your QAR to GBP rate effectively moves with the pound against the dollar rather than with the riyal itself, watch sterling against the dollar for timing. Qatar sits three hours ahead of the UK, and funding earlier in your day gives a transfer the best chance of completing on the same UK working day. At the UK end, your recipient is paid by sort code and account number, not an IBAN, with the pounds arriving over Faster Payments. If you move money across more than one border, our destinations hub lists the other routes we cover.

How long does a transfer from Qatar to the UK take?

Most transfers arrive within 1-2 working days. Delivery speed depends on:

  • Your bank's processing time (QNB, Doha Bank, etc.)
  • Whether we have all recipient details
  • Completion of compliance checks on either side
  • UK banking hours and weekends

Tip: Larger QAR transfers may be delayed by the sending bank due to internal checks. We'll guide you upfront to avoid surprises.

What you'll need to send money from Qatar

To send money to the UK, you'll typically need:

  • Valid ID (passport or driving licence)
  • Proof of address (utility bill or bank statement)
  • Recipient's full name and UK bank details (sort code and account number)
  • A brief reason for the transfer (e.g. family support, tuition, savings)
  • For transfers over £10,000, you may also be asked for:
  • Source of funds documents (e.g. bank statement, payslip, property sale, savings history)
  • Invoice or legal documents (for property or business payments)
  • Proof of relationship (if sending a gift to family)

We'll let you know upfront what's required for a smooth transfer.

Legal and tax notes for Qatar to UK transfers

  • On the UK side, receiving money from Qatar isn't taxed. The UK has no gift tax on the recipient, and moving your own earnings or savings into a UK account isn't income. Where UK tax can arise is on what the money represents, such as a gain on an asset you sold, not on the transfer itself. If the person sending is UK-domiciled, a large lifetime gift can still fall under inheritance tax's seven-year rule, where amounts over the £3,000 annual exemption only fully leave the estate after seven years.
  • On the Qatar side, Qatar levies no personal income tax and no gift or inheritance tax on individuals, so sending your earnings or savings abroad isn't taxed at the Qatari end.
  • The UK and Qatar have a double taxation agreement, so income such as a pension isn't taxed twice across the two countries. If you're claiming relief under it, HMRC's guidance and the DT-Individual form set out how.
  • For a larger transfer, keep the paperwork that shows what it's for, a contract for a property purchase, an invoice for tuition, or a completion statement for a sale. UK banks and payment firms run standard anti-money-laundering checks on larger amounts, and clear evidence of source and purpose keeps a genuine transfer moving and helps show it isn't a gift. There's no fixed sterling threshold that automatically triggers this for an electronic transfer, it's risk-based, and the £10,000 figure sometimes quoted is the rule for declaring cash carried in person, not a limit on bank transfers.
  • Separately, travellers physically carrying cash or valuables into or out of Qatar must declare amounts of QAR 50,000 or more (roughly £10,700) to Qatari customs, and Great Britain has its own £10,000 threshold for cash carried across its border. Both are customs rules for cash in person, not taxes, and neither applies to an electronic bank transfer.
  • These notes are general information, not tax advice. For a large transfer, and especially anything touching property, inheritance, or a sizeable gift, it's worth speaking to a UK tax adviser.
