Sending money from Saudi Arabia to the UAE? Here's what to know

This is a short-haul Gulf corridor, so transfers are quick, though one timing quirk is worth knowing: Saudi Arabia and the UAE keep different weekends, which can nudge the exact arrival by a day. Most SAR to AED payments with us reach the UAE account the same working day or the next once your riyals have cleared. Both currencies are pegged to the US dollar, so the SAR to AED rate stays stable, which makes the margin, not rate movement, the thing that decides your cost. Banks often widen the margin on the rate while calling the transfer fee-free, which can cost more than transparent pricing. We charge no payment transfer fees, and our margin is fixed, transparent, and set by transfer size, so a larger transfer is priced more keenly. The live SAR to AED page shows where the rate sits. To open an account you'll need photo ID and proof of address. For larger transfers, our compliance team asks for proof of source of funds, such as a business invoice, a property document, or a bank statement. There's no fixed cap, though bigger amounts go through extra verification. Our guide to large transfers covers what to expect.

Why people send money from Saudi Arabia to the UAE

As the Gulf's business and property hub, the UAE draws steady transfers from Saudi Arabia for trade, investment, and family.

Business and supplier payments

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are regional trade and finance hubs, so paying a UAE supplier, settling an invoice, or funding operations across the border is routine for Saudi businesses. Clear pricing on each payment keeps the cost predictable.

Property investment in the UAE

Dubai's property market attracts buyers from across the Gulf, and funding a deposit or completion means moving a large sum. On a purchase-sized transfer, the margin on the rate is what really decides the cost in dirhams.

Family support and remittances

Many people in Saudi Arabia send money to relatives living in the UAE. For payments that repeat, a steady rate and transparent pricing matter more than any single day's number.

Relocation

People moving from Saudi Arabia to the UAE for work often shift savings across ahead of the move. On a full savings transfer, getting the rate and timing right makes a real difference to what you start with.

Understanding the SAR to AED exchange rate

Why the rate barely moves

The Saudi riyal and the UAE dirham are both pegged to the US dollar, so the SAR to AED cross-rate is very stable. On a pegged pair like this, the rate isn't where providers differ, the margin they apply to it is.

The peg behind the pair

The Saudi riyal is fixed at 3.75 to the dollar and the dirham at 3.6725, rates their central banks have held for years. Because both track the same dollar, the rate between them stays close to constant, unlike a floating pair that can swing on economic news.

The mid-market rate and what you receive

The mid-market rate is the midpoint quoted between banks. We apply a small, transparent margin set by transfer size, with no payment transfer fees, and show you the exact SAR to AED rate for your amount before you confirm.

Forward contracts on a pegged pair

Even with a stable peg, a forward contract locks in the exact dirhams your recipient will receive, which is useful for budgeting a large property payment or a scheduled business run, and it removes any residual movement in the rate.

Sending money to a UAE bank account

UAE accounts use IBANs that start AE, and matching the name on the transfer to the account helps a payment land without a query. Banks are overseen by the Central Bank of the UAE, and your riyals arrive as a cross-border payment. The timing point specific to this route is the different weekends: Saudi Arabia takes Friday and Saturday off, while the UAE's weekend is Saturday and Sunday. That leaves Monday to Thursday as shared working days, with Friday a UAE working day and Sunday a Saudi one, so a transfer sent around the weekend can take a little longer to complete. If you send the other way too, our UAE to Saudi Arabia page covers that route, and our destinations hub lists the others.

What do you need to send money to the UAE?

To send money to a UAE bank account, you'll need:

  • Photo ID, either a passport or a national ID.
  • Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
  • The recipient's full name as it appears on their UAE account.
  • The recipient's full UAE IBAN.
  • The purpose of the transfer, which we'll ask about for larger amounts.
  • Source-of-funds evidence for a large transfer, such as a business invoice, a property document, or a bank statement.

For a property purchase, the recipient may be a developer or a lawyer's account, so confirm the IBAN and reference before you send.

How long does a transfer from Saudi Arabia to the UAE take?

Most transfers arrive the same working day or the next.

  • The different weekends. Saudi Arabia closes Friday and Saturday and the UAE closes Saturday and Sunday, so a transfer sent late on a Thursday may only complete once both sides are open again.
  • When you fund the transfer. Sending your riyals to us earlier in the day gives the payment the best chance of completing that working day.
  • First-transfer verification. Your first payment can take a little longer while your account is verified, then later transfers are quicker.
  • Compliance checks on larger amounts. A big property or business payment may need source-of-funds evidence, so having it ready avoids a pause.
  • Receiving bank processing. Once we release the dirhams, the UAE bank's own processing usually completes same or next working day.

A bank on this route can take a few working days. With us, most SAR to AED transfers reach the UAE account same or next working day, with the weekend mismatch the main thing to plan around.

Legal and tax notes for Saudi Arabia to UAE transfers

  • On the Saudi side, Saudi Arabia levies no personal income tax and no gift or inheritance tax on individuals, so sending money to family, a supplier, or your own account isn't taxed at the Saudi end.
  • On the UAE side, there's no personal income tax and no gift or inheritance tax on individuals, so money arriving for family or your own account isn't taxed as income. The UAE does levy a 9% corporate tax on business profits above AED 375,000, introduced in 2023, but that applies to businesses, not to personal transfers.
  • Cash declarations are separate from electronic transfers. Travellers physically carrying cash or valuables must declare SAR 40,000 or more leaving Saudi Arabia, and AED 60,000 or more entering the UAE (declared online through the Afseh platform), to the respective customs authorities. These are customs rules for cash in person, not taxes, and neither applies to a bank transfer.
  • These notes are general information, not tax advice. Business and property payments can carry their own tax treatment, so for anything beyond a straightforward personal transfer it's worth taking professional advice.
