Sending money from the UK to the UAE? Here's what to know

Most GBP to AED transfers with us reach the UAE account the same working day or the next once your pounds have cleared, and the UAE runs four hours ahead of the UK, so funding earlier in your day helps. The cost to watch is the exchange rate, not a fixed fee. A bank often shows a small charge and then applies a wider margin on GBP to AED, which adds up on a larger sum like relocation savings or a property deposit. We charge no payment transfer fees, and our margin is fixed, transparent, and set by transfer size, so a larger amount is priced more keenly. Because the dirham is pegged to the US dollar, your GBP to AED rate moves with the pound against the dollar, so it's worth watching sterling before a big transfer. The live GBP to AED page shows where the rate sits. To open an account you'll need photo ID and proof of address. For larger transfers, our compliance team asks for proof of source of funds, for example a payslip, an employment contract, or a property document. There's no fixed cap, though larger amounts go through additional verification. Our guide to large transfers walks through what to expect.

Why people send money from the UK to the UAE

The UAE's finance, property, and expat sectors draw UK professionals, and the money follows for salaries, family, and investment.

Relocating for work

Dubai and Abu Dhabi's finance, tech, and professional-services employers draw a steady stream of UK workers, and a lot of GBP to AED volume is people moving savings ahead of a relocation or topping up a UAE account once they've arrived. On a full savings move, the rate on the day matters.

Family support

People with family in the UAE, or UK-based relatives helping someone who has moved there, send money regularly. For recurring payments, a steady rate and transparent pricing matter more than any single day's number.

Property investment in the UAE

Dubai's property market draws UK buyers, and funding a deposit or completion means moving a large sum. On a purchase-sized transfer, the rate on the amount is what really decides the cost in dirhams.

Business and supplier payments

UK firms working with UAE partners, and businesses with staff on the ground, move sterling into dirhams for suppliers and operations. Clear pricing keeps the cost predictable. If you send the other way too, our UAE to UK page covers that route.

Understanding the GBP to AED exchange rate

Why the rate matters on this corridor

Relocation funds and property payments are large, so the exchange rate does most of the work in deciding how many dirhams land. On a sizeable transfer, a small move in the rate is worth more than any flat fee.

The mid-market rate and what you receive

The mid-market rate is the midpoint quoted between banks. We apply a small, transparent margin set by transfer size, with no payment transfer fees, and show you the exact GBP to AED rate for your amount before you confirm.

How the GBP to AED rate moves

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate the Central Bank of the UAE has held for years. That means your GBP to AED rate effectively tracks the pound against the dollar, not the dirham, so it's sterling's strength against the dollar that decides when it's a good moment to send.

Fixing a rate for a future payment

Because the pound side floats, the GBP to AED rate can move noticeably before a payment you'll make later. A forward contract lets you lock in a rate now for a relocation payment or a property completion, so a move in sterling doesn't change what you've budgeted in dirhams.

Sending pounds to a UAE bank account

UAE accounts use IBANs that start AE, and international payments arrive over SWIFT, so your recipient will give you their full IBAN, and matching the account name to the transfer helps it land without a query. Banks are overseen by the Central Bank of the UAE. The UAE runs four hours ahead of the UK and keeps a Saturday-to-Sunday weekend that lines up with the UK's, so there's no working-week mismatch to plan around, just the small time difference. If you're sending in the other direction, our UAE to UK page covers that route, and our destinations hub lists the others.

How long does a transfer from the UK to the UAE take?

Most transfers arrive the same working day or the next.

  • When you fund the transfer. Paying us by Faster Payments early in the UK day, and remembering the UAE is four hours ahead, gives your dirhams the best chance of arriving the same working day.
  • First-transfer verification. Your first payment can take a little longer while your account is verified, then later transfers are quicker.
  • Compliance checks on larger amounts. A big relocation or property payment may need source-of-funds evidence, so having it ready avoids a pause.
  • Aligned weekends. The UAE keeps a Saturday-to-Sunday weekend like the UK, so there's no working-week mismatch to add delay, unlike some other Gulf routes.
  • Receiving bank processing. Once we release the dirhams, the UAE bank's own processing usually completes same or next working day.

A bank on this route can take two to four working days. With us, most GBP to AED transfers land same or next working day, with a few factors affecting the exact timing.

What do you need to send money to the UAE?

To send money to a UAE bank account, you'll need:

  • Photo ID, either a passport or a driving licence.
  • Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement.
  • The recipient's full name as it appears on their UAE account.
  • The recipient's full UAE IBAN.
  • The purpose of the transfer, which we'll ask about for larger amounts.
  • Source-of-funds evidence for a large transfer, for example a payslip, an employment contract, or a property document.

For a property purchase, the recipient may be a developer or a lawyer's account, so confirm the IBAN and reference before you send.

Legal and tax notes for UK to UAE transfers

  • On the UK side, sending the money isn't a taxable event in itself. If you're making a large lifetime gift and you're UK-domiciled, it can fall under inheritance tax's seven-year rule: amounts over the £3,000 annual exemption are potentially exempt transfers and only fully leave your estate if you survive seven years.
  • On the UAE side, there's no personal income tax and no gift or inheritance tax on individuals, so money you send to family or into your own account there isn't taxed as income. The UAE does levy a 9% corporate tax on business profits above AED 375,000, introduced in 2023, but that applies to businesses, not to personal transfers or salary.
  • The UK and UAE have a double taxation agreement, so income such as a pension isn't taxed twice across the two countries. In practice, because the UAE doesn't tax personal income, double taxation of a UK pension rarely arises, but the treaty governs how cross-border income is treated.
  • Cash declarations are separate from electronic transfers. Travellers physically carrying cash or valuables into the UAE must declare AED 60,000 or more (declared online through the Afseh platform), and Great Britain has its own £10,000 threshold for cash carried across its border. Both are customs rules for cash in person, not taxes, and neither applies to a bank transfer. Note there's no fixed sterling threshold that triggers a check on an electronic transfer, those checks are risk-based.
  • These notes are general information, not tax advice. For a large gift, a relocation, or a property purchase in the UAE, it's worth taking professional advice on your own situation.
